now, the Garant rifle's on

now, the Bar machine gun's on
my shoulder
i discover how heavy those
heavy steel blocks are
i discover that during the life as
a teacher, i had been an
ignoramus
in those dozen years
i committed lots of sins
for during those dozen years i
never told my students how
heavy were those
heavy steel blocks
i did not tell my wife my
children my friends my
compatriots that our brothers
and our country have had to
carry those heavy steel blocks
all those years
now lying in ambush on the edge
of a rice paddy my shoulders
are wet with the descending
damp fog
now standing night-watch at the
sentry post in the ancient forest
with the bone-chilling wind
now i know how cold is the
cold fog
now i know how cold is the
cold wind
i want to shout out
i am ignorant
i am an ignoramus
for everyday during those dozen years in the past
i did not write down with ink
and paper for those who
loved my poems to know
that our brothers and our country have been standing like that for so many years
now that i move in operation
with my unit at day at night
under the sun under the rain
now that i cannot eat
cannot sleep
cannot smile
cannot cry
i am asking you the brothers
who sat before me on the

i am asking you the brothers
who have read my beloved

what have i accomplished
to enable you to smile to cry to

to enable you to find their

the brothers killed at their

the brothers killed

the brothers killed
while lying in ambush
the brothers whose dead faces
were a thousand times
more handsome than me
died
the brothers who were the
wunderkinds and
a thousand
times smarter
than me
died
the brothers whose newly-wed
fragrance still lingered in their
nuptial bed
died
the brothers whose lover could
hardly write the
words straight
in her letters
died
the brothers whose children
are even younger than mine
died
the brothers whose elderly
mother was more frail than

died
the brothers who deserved

please absolve me of

VỢ NHÍ

My "Young chick" Wife
Chơi thanh chơi lịch là chơi,
To practice the joy of life, one needs to be a class act
To do it nobly, to let others know what kind of guy you are.
Thói đời ganh tị thày lay,
Others' s habit is to envy,
Chê bai rõ muốn, sao hay bằng mình.
To try to put you down and claim they are the best.
Vác cô vợ nhí rõ xinh,
When I take my "young and soooo pretty chick wife" out
Trình làng, ta hưởng xuân tình phong lưu.
And showcase her, I am in the rapture of love
Dõng mãnh dù tuổi về hưu,
And able to prove that , though retired, I still am a stud,
And I'll dare the other men to show they are just as good?
Thế thì chớ có xì xào,
So, do not utter bad thoughts under your breaths
Thòm thèm nhỏ dãi, hãy gào trong mơ.
If you yearn for what I have, go cry in your dreams
Nàng thời mướt mịn như tơ,
For she is as smooth as silk
Mà sao săn chắc, lẳn ơ … diễm tình.
And yet her muscles are so toned and she's sooo... amorous.
Nồng nàn ấp ủ dập dình,
Tenderly we embrace, we go back, and we go forth.
Who cares where the world is going to become.
Lộc trời thì chẳng còn lâu,
God-given gift will certainly not last
Hưởng thì cứ hưởng, lộc thâu lúc nào!
So, enjoy it while you can, for no one knows when He will take it back

The Impossible Dream
Bài hát chính của vở nhạc kịch "MAN OF LA MANCHA".
To dream the impossible dream,
To fight the unbeatable foe,,
To bear with unbearable sorrow,,
To run where the brave dare not go.,
,
,
To right the unrightable wrong,,
To love pure and chaste from afar,,
To try when your arms are too weary,,
To reach the unreachable star.,
,
,
This is my quest, to follow that star,,
No matter how hopeless, no matter how far ,
To fight for the right, without ,question or pause, ,
To be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause ,
,
And I know if I'll only be true to this glorious quest, ,
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm when I'm laid to my rest. ,
And the world will be better for this, ,
That one man, scorned and covered with scars, ,
Still strove with his last ounce of courage. ,
To reach the unreachable star. ,
To reach the unreachable star,,
Though you know it’s impossibly high,,
To live with your heart striving upward,,
To a far, unattainable sky!,

Little Bird Little Bird
from
Man of La Mancha
Little bird, little bird,
In the cinnamon tree,
Little bird, little bird,
Do you sing for me?
Hỡi con chim bé,
Đậu trên cành quế,
Hỡi con chim bé,
Hát cho ta nghe.
Do you bring me word,
Of one I know?
Little bird, little bird, I love her so,
Little bird, little bird, I have to know,
Little bird, little bird.
Nếu con chim bé,
Có chút từ bi,
Hãy đem nàng về,
Dưới cành cây quế.
Beneath this tree, this cinnamon tree,
We learned to love, we learned to cry;
For here we met and here we kissed,
And here one cold and moonless night
We said goodbye.
Dưới cành cây quế, dưới cành cây đó,
Chúng ta biết khóc, chúng ta biết yêu;
Little bird, little bird,
Oh, have pity on me,
Bring her back to me now,
‘Neath the cinnamon tree.
Nếu con chim bé,
Có chút từ bi,
Hãy đem nàng về,
Dưới cành cây quế.
I’ve waited too long,
Without a song…
Little bird, little bird, please fly, please go.
Little bird, little bird, and tell her so,
Little bird, little bird!

TO NHỎ....NHỎ TO
Vè chữ Việt, Lê Tuấn viết lại bằng tiếng Anh.
VIỆT NAM là một nước hơi nhỏ .
Vietnam is a rather SMALL country
But in that rather SMALL country, there’s a BIG capital.
And in that BIG capital, there are many SMALL streets.
And on those SMALL streets, there are some very BIG houses.
And in some of those BIG houses, there are some very SMALL mistresses.
Those very SMALL mistresses are for some of the rather BIG shots.
Những ông quan thật to , lại đeo một cái cặp hơi nhỏ .
Those BIG shots usually carry a rather SMALL briefcase.
In those rather SMALL briefcases there usually are some BIG plans,
Những dự án tuy rất to , nhưng hiệu qủa lại qúa nhỏ
And even though the plans are BIG, their effectiveness is very SMALL.
Hiệu qủa qúa nhỏ , nhưng thất thoát lại thật to .
The effectiveness is SMALL but the losses are so BIG.
Tuy thất thoát thật to , lại được coi là cái lỗi rất nhỏ .
Although the losses are BIG, the mistakes are deemed very SMALL.
And consequently, Vietnam gradually turns into a rather SMALL country.
But in that SMALL country, there are some very BIG leaders
But on those BIG leaders are some very SMALL heads
Even though their heads are SMALL, their pockets are BIG
And though their pockets are BIG, their knowledge is very SMALL.
And that very SMALL knowledge does great BIG harm to the country.

UNDER WATCH
Translated from a piece by Nghiêm Hữu Hùng
During the time period from 1980-1985 we, the ordinary people, are constantly under-watch.The local police would make us, the under-watch people, to produce a logbook in which we are to record everything we do in 24 hours, by the minute.
Here are things/anecdotes that would bring tears to your eyes while you laugh. Just close your eyes and imagine that you are confined in your house 24/7 (having been stripped of your citizen’s right, you are not allowed to leave your house except for the half-hour trip to the police to present your logbook and get a stamp certifying that you have done so) and you are to record all your activities in those 24 hours. The logbook would typically show the following:From 11.00 P.M. to 7.00 A.M. (8 hours): SLEEP - you are not allowed to sleep more, If you did, you would be labeled LAZY and criticized
But you still have the other 16 hours to itemize in the “under-watch” logbook.
You will prove that you do suffer from a case of severe and chronic constipation and you are an extremely CLEAN person (even though people who have met you in the re-educational prison camp will say that they have seldom seen you take a bath). The reason for that is that you have to declare you use 2 hours a day to take a BATH and take a SHIT.
That would still leave you with the other 14 hours. What would you do? And what to record in the logbook?
Some of my unmarried friends become good sons to their parents. For they have to reserve 6 hours a day to take care of their parents even though it’s not known how they manage to do that. The reason is that because they haven’t been given residency permit and food stamps (to be able to BUY foods) their parents are the one who have to stand in line to buy the necessary food stuff to feed their sons.
The bachelors whose parents are dead would be in a jam since they would not know what to record what they would have done in those 6 hours.
But their predicament is mild compared to the fate of the guys who are married, for they have to record that they use those 6 hours to “Take Care” of their spouses even though their spouses are perfectly healthy. And consequently, you will hear a comment from the police:
“You are LUCKY and HEALTHY too, aren’t you? How many times a day do you “take care” of your wife?”
But even though you declare that you have to “take care” of your wife for 6 hours a day, the unfilled hours are still abundant. If you had a little garden to work on, it would be nice for you to fabricate a few hours of activity because you can’t honestly say that it takes you a couple of hours a day to cook. The reason is that you have nothing to cook with: You surely can’t declare that it takes you two hours to boil a couple of pieces of yam. To cook a chicken is impossible since it requires a permission from the Socialist government to boil a chicken except when there is a funeral or a wedding in your household. You can’t get married everyday or bury your loved ones everyday, can you?
So, you would have to record in your logbook that you read or listen to the radio…to learn about the Party’s policies. But reading could be harmful to you because the local police could, out of the blue, ask you what are you reading to see if what you read is decadent, immoral, or anti-government literature.
I have a friend who suffers the worst fate. He lives all by himself since his parents are dead and his wife has braved the sea to escape to America. He’s not allowed to go out, so…"in the afternoons when the blues surreptitiously invades your soul”…he has to resort to the auto-erotic method of a handjob. But the problem is that he can’t record that kind of activity in his logbook so he puts down: Reading the newspaper from 4.00 to 6.00 P.M.
Unfortunately for him, the local police notice that he has been “reading the newspaper” too much and decide to make an unannounced inspection.
“What, show me what kind of newspaper you are reading,” they demand.
My friend, who by nature is a wimp, scrambles to retrieve the newspaper “THE PEOPLE” from under the bed.
“Here, sir.”
Now, our wise-ass ancestors used to say, “Being famous is not necessarily be a good thing.” I hastily and whole-heartedly concur with my ancestors. Let me explain: During the late 70’s or early 80’s, there’s only one newspaper, “THE PEOPLE”, on whose daily front page graces the portrait of an ever-smiling “Uncle Ho”. And during those impoverished days people have to be “entrepreneurial” in exhauting all viable means to make their lives easier. The result is that “Uncle Ho”‘s pictures are all over the floor of public shithouses every morning.
Of course, the police are mad as hell but they can’t do a thing about it. The only action they could take is to spy on the people while they do their “labor work” at night to catch them red-handed.
But that would demean the integrity of the Party, would it not?
So, my friend becomes the victim of the “people’s labor work” because when he shows the police the newspaper, “Uncle Ho”‘s picture on the front page is still smeared with the sleazy, mucus-like substance that my friend has squirted out earlier. My friend is promptly arrested and sent to jail for the crime of “having no respect for our Sage Leader.”
That type of crime could easily bring the death penalty.

"LES FEUILLES MORTES".
Originally a 1945 French song "Les feuilles mortes" (literally "The Dead Leaves") with music by Joseph Kosma and lyrics by poet Jacques Prévert, the American songwriter Johnny Mercer wrote English lyrics in 1947; he also wrote MOON RIVER and CHARADE.

The falling leaves drift by my window
Những lá mùa thu rơi qua cửa sổ
The falling leaves of red and gold
Những lá mùa thu ánh vàng, sắc đỏ
I miss your lips, the summer kisses
Anh nhớ môi em nụ hôn mùa hạ
The sunburned hand I used to hold.
Bàn tay anh nắm nắng cháy thịt da.
Since you went away the days grow long
Từ lúc em đi ngày dài vô tận
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
Anh chỉ còn nghe khúc hát mùa Đông.
But I miss you most of all, my darling
Anh nhớ em nhiều em yêu, em hỡi,
When autumn leaves start to fall
Khi mùa thu tới, lá bắt đầu rơi.
